All furniture at the National Union Building, such as ceremony chairs and reception tables, must be coordinated through your wedding planner.
The building: this masterpiece on the block of 9th and F street was designed and built in 1890 by Glenn Brown and originally served as the home of the National Union Fire Insurance Company. In more recent history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and is a contributing property to the Downtown Historic District. It served as LivingSocial’s “experience” building after its renovation in 2013 and is one of the only dedicated historic event and wedding venues in Washington, DC.

Gretchen Kapuscik made planning our wedding at the National Union Building far more stressful than it needed to be. I plan events professionally, and this was one of the most frust...
rating customer service experiences I’ve had.
We held a small wedding with about 14 guests. Even so, the weeks leading up to it involved an exhausting amount of back-and-forth over basic details. During our walkthrough, we understood that the room would be set according to our floor plan before we arrived. Days before the wedding, we were still being told that moving chairs was our responsibility. We also had to keep pressing for answers about the setup and timeline when the event was right around the corner.
What made it especially hard was the way those conversations felt. We needed someone willing to help us work through the details, and too often Gretchen’s responses came across as condescending and focused on what couldn’t be done. By the end, I felt like I was managing the venue instead of being supported by it.
Our wedding day was beautiful, and I’m grateful for that. But getting there took far more energy than a couple should have to spend on venue coordination, especially for an event this small. If you’re considering this venue for a special day, I’d strongly recommend getting every setup responsibility and timing detail confirmed in writing before you book, otherwise I’d strongly suggest choosing another location!! Good luck 👎

One of our engaged guests wants to book the space for their wedding after seeing how awesome it was. It really was the perfect space - a great aesthetic, a great value, and an excellent overall experience.
