I toured Fremont Abbey in September 2025, loved it, and booked it for our wedding that same week. A year later, I spent the final weeks before our wedding trying and failing to get...
anyone there to talk to me.
Starting six weeks out, I was the one handling the venue. I emailed asking how to pay our balance and to confirm our plan for the wedding day. When nobody answered, I called their main line several times and couldn't leave a message because the voicemail box was full. I tracked down more Abbey email addresses from their website and added them to the thread. I paid the full balance anyway, hoping that would get someone's attention. It didn't. Twelve days after my first question, I was still writing to ask about the same early start.
It was very stressful as all of our vendors were waiting to confirm the logistics. We ended up scrambling to find and book a new venue four weeks before our wedding.
When we asked for a refund, the Abbey's position was that the contract only reserved the date, so answering our questions was never really their job. They kept our full payment. The date was never re-rented, and the day before our wedding, they offered us $250.
I would recommend using a different venue.
We booked Fremont Abbey a year in advance for our October 3, 2026 wedding and paid in full. We did not get married here. We want to explain why as fairly as we can, because future ...
couples deserve to know.
Our main request was simple. We wanted to confirm we could pay the extra fee to load in a couple of hours early, at 2 or 3pm on the day of our wedding, so our caterer could set up. We also asked how to pay our balance and when we could do a walkthrough. Over the next two weeks we:
- emailed on six separate days
- copied every Abbey address we could find
- called during their posted hours (the venue later confirmed three of those calls; the voicemail box was full)
- walked in on a Tuesday afternoon, where the staff member had no answers and told us to email
The one reply we got explained that responses take 3 to 4 business days and pointed us to how to make our final payment. So we paid in full, hoping that once the money was in, someone would finally talk to us. It changed nothing. The early load-in question, asked five times, was never answered. We were offering to pay them more, and could not get a yes or a no.
With four weeks to go, our caterer still had no confirmed load-in time, and the venue's own 45-day paperwork deadline had passed. We made the hard decision to find another venue. If you have ever tried to book a Seattle venue for an October Saturday a month out, you know what those weeks felt like.
What followed is the part we most want other couples to read:
- The Executive Director first wrote that she only saw our emails on two dates. After we sent screenshots, she confirmed most of them had arrived and mentioned a possible server issue.
- The owner then called us and apologized. He acknowledged that the Abbey had not held the planning meetings it was supposed to. When we mentioned small claims court, he laughed and told us good luck getting our money back that way.
- Three days later, the Abbey put its position in writing. Their email said the contract and payment simply reserve the venue for the date, and that planning meetings are "a courtesy." In their view, their only obligation was to unlock the doors on the day itself. Answering a couple's questions in the weeks before their wedding was not something they considered their responsibility.
- They said they had done nothing wrong and would keep our full payment unless they re-rented the date. The day before our wedding, they told us it had never been re-rented. Their offer was a $250 refund of the house manager fee.
Please sit with that for a moment. A wedding venue, in writing, taking the position that its job is the day itself and nothing before it. Every couple knows the wedding day only works because of the weeks of planning that come first. A venue that doesn't see that as part of the job is not a wedding venue. It's a room with a calendar.
The booking team was warm and quick when they were selling us the space. After our final payment cleared, we could not get a straight answer. If you book here, know that by the Abbey's own account, your payment buys the date and nothing more. Get every commitment in writing.
The “house manager” assigned for our wedding lacked professionalism and caused a lot of issues with our planner and family members. My now husband even had to step in between her t...
o stop an argument. Communication was lacking. We started clean up early and by the end of the night we were glad it was over, which as a bride sucked.
Fremont Abbey was a beautiful and the perfect place for our wedding ceremony and reception. It is a more laid-back venue, which we appreciated. However, that means you need to be ...
more vigilant about communication and making sure to get what is needed for the day-of. Fremont Abbey isn't in the business to try to SELL you on their venue. They're a non-profit organization and allow for weddings at a very fair cost. The staff was easy to work with and the day-of coordinator was especially helpful with the whole set-up.
Parking is more difficult, so we rented the private parking lot (15 spaces or so) about half a block away. But I didn't hear any guests complain about street parking. And I most wished we had A/C as it was a HOT day. Only a handful of fans were provided, so that was uncomfortable.
I highly recommend Fremont Abbey Arts Center.
The Abbey space is beautiful, and provided the perfect space for our DIY wedding. The staff was helpful during planning, but stayed in the background during our big day. A lack of ...
parking was really the only drawback, but all of our guests still arrived on time, so there appeared to be plenty of street parking.
Fremont Abbey was the perfect venue for us. We wanted to use as many non-profit vendors as possible and we just loved the mission of the Fremont Abbey, which is arts education for ...
the community. The venue is a beautiful red brick building with tall stain-glass windows and an urban feel. The downstairs cafe was perfect for our karaoke and dance party after the ceremony/dinner in the great room.
The drawback is that because Fremont Abbey is a nonprofit and they have very limited staff, you're not going to get responses to your emails as quickly. It won't be like dealing with a professional wedding venue, because they're not a professional wedding venue. They're an arts nonprofit doing weddings on the side.
Still, they definitely came through for us on everything we needed. Everything was beautiful and again, it was the perfect venue for us.
