The food trial was amazing, the concept of having pizza made on site was really interesting, and they said they were willing to work with dietary restrictions.
I worked with Forno... so that I could ensure everything ran smoothly on the wedding day: I printed labels for the buffet line, I got choices from those with allergies so we could clearly mark these in a separate location, and I asked them to charge us for additional staff so that things could run smoothly.
But so many random issues popped up: in the middle of my cocktail hour a few people walked through the middle of our event in jeans and tshirts, picked up a few pizzas (already packed into boxes), and walked out... mind you this was off-site catering. I don't know how these pizzas were arranged and paid for; but considering we were about 2 hours from Forno's home location, I didn't expect to have to worry about them conducting their regular pick up and delivery schedules during my formal event.
They never set anything out during cocktail hour so we weren't sure if they were simply behind on their schedule. We checked in to ensure all was running smoothly - but the person dismissing tables had to see if/when they would be putting out the food 15 minutes *after* people were suppossed to have started eating.
When staff finally put out the pizzas, nothing was labeled My mother had to stop the staff and work with them to "figure out" which of the pizzas were safe so that those with celiacs and dairy ALLERGIES (not intolerances but hospital-style-anaphylactic-shock allergies) could eat the food they'd made selections for in advance. My mom then put out the labels for those so at the very least people could see that they were not going to have to be sent to the emergency room.
As if this were not frustrating enough, Forno's staff then approached us (the bride and groom), and pulled us away from speaking with guests to tell us they were going to begin closing down. Again, this wouldn't have been that great of an issue, except for the fact that multiple tables had not even been dismissed yet. We had to request that they wait at least 10 more minutes for us to finish and make a quick announcement to guests that they could go up for seconds before they cleaned up.
Some of the remaining pizza was put in boxes, but the majority was thrown onto paper plates unappatizingly and mixed up so that we were left with no choice to discard it ourselves later on in the night. We tipped the bussers (we tried to clarify gratuity expectations in advance so no one was stiffed but we were not given a clear answer) and they left.
I am a very Type A person. As such, I had a long running email chain with the company in an effort to clarify all necessary details leading up to the wedding. I've worked in catering for years myself and have worked with dozens of caterers in the past, I know that an event like mine should not have been mishandled the way that it was. I don't know where or how things went wrong with Forno speficifically, as they never asked for greater clarification.
I hate to review a local business so poorly, but it was my wedding day and I would have gone with a more traditional caterer had I known I was trading taste for general professionalism.
*For clarification we set up the buffet tables, linens, and labels so that the presentation matched our venue. Forno simply put out the food*
