Peggy and her team were wonderful to work with. I first met Peggy at a wedding expo and told her I wanted to wear my mother’s wedding gown but with a few updates. She immediately s...
aid, “No problem,” and I knew I was in the right hands.
I want to start by saying the process took more than 10 fittings—and that was intentional. Because this was my mom’s dress, Peggy made sure we were included in every decision before she made any cuts or changes. We would come in, put the dress on, and confirm everything together. It made the experience so meaningful.
We had a few concerns going in: the dress was over 40 years old, and my mom was smaller than I was at the start of the process. Other seamstresses told me I’d need to lose a significant amount of weight, but Peggy reassured us from day one. She said the dress was in great shape and that the size difference wasn’t an issue. She made me feel comfortable and confident exactly as I was.
At the beginning, Peggy asked for inspiration photos—some of which I’ve included in the pictures—and asked what I liked and didn’t like. Little did I know she already understood the vision for the dress perfectly.
The first step was matching the original fabric. She added an extra piece to the back to account for the size difference. By the time the wedding arrived, I was within an inch of my mom’s original size, so part of that addition was removed. Once the fabric was added, I could try it on for the first time. The only things I knew for sure were that I didn’t want long sleeves or a high collar.
At my next appointment, the sleeves and collar came off. Peggy then pointed out the beautiful lace at the neckline. I had originally wanted a V-neck, but once I saw how stunning the lace looked, I decided to keep it.
The next step—one of the most special—was designing the back. The entire back of my dress was created using hand-placed lace from the hat my mother wore on her wedding day (she claims that was the style back then!). It became one of the most beautiful parts of the dress and required so much time and care to ensure everything mirrored perfectly. Peggy and her team did an incredible job.
Because I’m slightly taller than my mom and wanted to wear heels, Peggy also adjusted the straps to add length, creating the perfect fit.
Peggy completely transformed my mother’s gown into my dream wedding dress. It meant the world to me to wear something so meaningful, and the process itself became such a special experience for my mom and me. I’ve included some progress photos and wedding day pictures in the comments.
For any brides considering updating a family gown, I cannot recommend Peggy enough. I was terrified of having a “27 Dresses” moment, but every step was intentional, emotional, and so special. Trust the process and be open to suggestions. I absolutely loved my dress and received so many compliments.
Peggy is a superstar and absolutely wonderful! From start to finish, she was just amazing. I knew that my wedding gown was in very good hands.
When it came time for my final fitt...
ing, I could hardly believe the magic she worked. I knew I loved my dress, but having my dress fit me so perfectly was just so amazing. My now-husband was blown away when we did our first look.
I'm so grateful for Peggy’s role in making our day so special. I highly recommend Custom Alterations to anyone looking for a talented seamstress for their wedding dress (or any alterations)!
Peggy was kind and caring from the first time I met her at O’Day Lodge Wedding Expo. She was easy to talk to and let me know she can basically do anything. After a few expos I knew...
she was the one for me because how welcoming, down to earth, and special she made me feel.
I was planning my wedding back home in MO (currently live in TN) so scheduling my fitting would have been hard if I went anywhere else. Peggy was flexible and worked with my schedule so I could get in my 3-4 fitting before the wedding.
We had spoke about shortening the hem, adding straps, adding bustles to my dress, and hooks for my cape to be secured to my dress all night.
I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out at first but she had it planned out. When she told me how she could do everything I was blown away. I didn’t even know you could bustle a cape and still have it look so elegant. Both the bustle of the dress and cape flowed so well together you would have thought it was meant to always be that way.
On my wedding night I was able to dance the night away without having to hold my dress up. The straps looked delicate but held up so well.
More to come- Peggy is working on my bridesmaids dress for my little sister’s wedding now and she works miracles.
My bridesmaids dress came in from a dress shop we ordered from with a large stain on the front chest area. They also ordered the wrong size too. I was mortified and so heartbroken as I knew I wouldn’t have time to order a replacement dress.
Peggy was able to get the stain out for me and you can’t tell it was ever there. She also was able to take the zipper out and replace it with a corset back. I can’t wait to see the final look.
Her pricing doesn’t even come close to the magic she can and does create.
Pro-tips: bring your wedding shoes and undergarments when doing fittings. (I forgot about my corset and it ended up “making” my dress longer in the front) ***I still love my dress and cape though ❤️***

any, I was feeling defeated, but Peggy completely restored my confidence. From the moment I met her, she truly listened to my vision and made me feel heard, cared for, and supported.
It was extremely important to me to have a dress that was both modest and beautiful, and Peggy nailed it perfectly. She captured the essence of what I wanted in every detail, and I couldn't have been happier with the result. I wore my dress for over 8 hours on my wedding day, and I was completely comfortable the entire time—something I truly appreciated.
If you could have seen my dress before, you'd understand just how much of a transformation Peggy and her team worked and I’ve been overwhelmed with compliments ever since. I can’t recommend Peggy enough—if you’re in the St. Louis area and need alterations, whether for a wedding dress or any other garment, Peggy at “Custom Alterations” is the one to go to! Visit http://www.stlseamstress.com and you'll see exactly why.

never received my dress back, I am not receiving any contact back, and still do not have my dress. I can only assume something happened to my dress and they are not wanting to own up to it. I would caution anyone to utilize the cleaning services offered.

story:
On Sept. 9th, I had my first wedding dress fitting at an alterations shop — I was referred by the shop where I purchased my dress. It was normal. The second fitting wasn't until Nov. 8th, a month later, but the seamstress said it'd be fine. Nov. 8th was a complete nightmare. When I tried on the gown, none of the alterations had been done. The seamstress hadn't done any of the work, chuckled, and said, "Oh, I missed this, and that... looks like we're starting over." She couldn't figure out how to do the bustle, kept trying to shorten the dress straps, used pins that were too big and left marks in the side of the gown, and even cut off lace from the side of the gown. She couldn't schedule me for a third —extra—fitting until Nov. 27th because she said "her schedule was so full" and she "had tons of gowns to do" before mine. My wedding was Dec. 8th. I left the shop with my mom, so upset I couldn't talk.
Nov. 9th, my mom called Custom Alterations and talked to Peggy. Peggy was compassionate, kind, and asked if we wanted to visit the shop that day just to talk. At 1 p.m., Peggy sat with me, listened through my tears, and explained everything that needed to be done on the gown by looking at photos. After some hugs and words of encouragement, I felt confident that Peggy could make my gown beautiful. She restored my trust and made me feel comfortable. We left to get the dress from the other shop, and by 3:30 p.m., Peggy had pinned the hem, straps, and a few other necessary alterations — first fitting done!
Nov. 14th, Peggy had completed ALL the alterations on my gown. That's 5 days later! EVERYTHING was done!! The dress looked gorgeous, and I felt amazing. Courtney walked us through the steps to bustle the dress on wedding day, and answered all my mom's questions. Dec. 7th, I picked up my dress and veil, both pressed and ready to go, with a huge smile.
Peggy loves what she does and it's evident in every stitch. She is knowledgeable, caring, empathetic, funny, and a wonderful person. I couldn't recommend her enough! If you need any alterations whatsoever, go see Peggy! :)
LOVED my experience. I recommend this place to anyone who is looking for alterations. The woman who runs the place is amazing and knows what she's doing. I needed my wedding dress ...
hemmed a little, bustles put in, and straps put on. The women found the PERFECR fabric for the straps, it looked like the dress was made with the straps already on it. I will be coming back for any alteration needs.
I can not thank the Custom Alterations staff and Peggy, the owner, enough for all their hard work on my wedding dress. I bought a second-hand dress that I knew needed alterations, ...
and Peggy and her staff exceeded all expectations. They were lovely to work with and were so helpful when I needed feedback to decide on things to change with my dress. It was very important to Peggy that I was happy with every aspect, and she made me feel so comfortable in her shop. I ended up getting the dress altered to fit (because it was multiples sizes too big), added sleeves, changed the back of the dress/added buttons, changed the neckline, added more lace, and shortened the length. Peggy completely transformed my dress to exactly what I envisioned! I felt like a princess, and it was all because of her and her team. The quality of work, customer service, and attention to detail was exceptional! I couldn’t thank them enough for helping create my dream dress! I highly recommend them for all wedding, prom, and other alteration needs!

eks before the wedding when I found out I was pregnant. Peggy was the first person I called. She brought me in for extra fittings up until the week before the wedding. With two days to go, she decided to make some finals modifications overnight and had my dress fitting me perfectly. In such a stressful time, Peggy was so reassuring and comforting and I can’t thank her enough for that.

I brought the lace I had ordered with my dress and Peggy and her team effortlessly created a design on my train that looked as if it had been there in the first place. It was absolutely stunning. Also, as a larger tested woman, I still picked a dress that had a sheer back. Peggy came up with an idea to tack in a long-line bra that she then custom fit in to the dress so I felt totally supported during my entire wedding.

hile to get right but at the end fit me just as if I had not bought a dress 6 sizes too big! The dress needed a lot of work, and I knew from the beginning that it would take awhile so there were quite a few fittings, and a few that didn't have a lot of progress done and so may have been avoided, but at the end the quality of work was very impressive and I couldn't have been happier!

I had a bad experience at custom alterations and this is my only badly reviewed vendor after the wedding. Before my ceremony the clasp holding my dress together broke and the zippe...
r kept falling down. In an earlier appointment the clasp broke but Peggy assured me that the dress just comes with a cheap clasp and if she puts one on it won't break assuring me that the dress was not too tight. Not knowing how wedding dresses are supposed to fit, I assumed it was ok and believed what she told me. I ended up walking down the aisle worried about my dress falling off of me and that the back was almost completely open! I then spent almost the entire dinner away from my guests while my bridesmaids had to sew and safety pin me into my dress... My mom emailed Peggy to let her know what happened and she blamed it on me because I said the dress was fine even though she had assured me the clasp wouldn't break.
I probably wouldn't have written a bad review if she would have just apologized/admitted she made a mistake but blaming it on me was unprofessional and upsetting. Alterations were also VERY expensive and the fact that the dress didn't last the day made it a waste of money. This was my dream dress and all my guests saw was a zipper falling down in the back and it was very disruptive all evening. (I should also mention that I lost weight from the time I tried the dress on until wedding day so it wasn't that!)
After reading the reviews on here, I thought I had chosen the best place to get alterations in St. Louis. That wasn't the case for me. Come to find out the Yelp reviews weren't a...
s glowing as the ones I found here. Unfortunately I do NOT recommend this place at all. Our first appointment was great, everyone was super friendly and made me feel at ease about the alterations that needed to be made to my dress... the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fittings were the exact opposite. One time I went in when we had scheduled a fitting and they had gotten the day and time mixed up and Peggy got an attitude/very rude and unprofessional with ME about HER mixing up the times. I left in tears because of how rude she was. After that, I came in to find a spot of blood in my dress at the bottom where her and her team were hand sewing on lace to the bottom of my dress. She actually had the audacity to blame this blood spot on me... when obviously I hadn't even been in contact with the dress. She also told me she would put some fabric in the armpits of the dress to make it soft and never even did that. At my last dress fitting (a week before my wedding) she STILL hadn't finished my dress and told me I "had ants in my pants and need to calm down". Who wouldn't have "ants in their pants" when their dress isn't finished a week before their wedding? Not only that but at my last fitting she pricked her finger and got ANOTHER little spot of blood on the side of my dress. Finally (AND THE WORST PART OF ALL) she also was supposed to fix some snaps onto my clip on train (the favorite part of my dress) and after I FINALLY got to take my dress home, I try it on at my house (after asking her multiple times while I was there if she fixed the snaps and she assured me she had) only to find out she hadn't even fixed the snaps and my mother and grandma had to go to the fabric store to get clips and fix the snap theirselves. I was in such a rush to get out of there the last fitting because of how bad every other fitting was which is my mistake for not making her SHOW my she had fixed the snaps before I left. You would think she would told the truth though when she told me she had fixed them? Absolutely horrible customer service and a very upsetting experience thanks to Custom Alternations. Save your money and go somewhere where they will actually fix your dress and not make it worse.
If I could give 10 stars I would! Peggy is more than amazing. She has been a family friend since my Grandma was younger and when I knew I needed alterations to my dress I wanted so...
meone I could trust.
Peggy pretty much took my dress apart and altered it to fit me better and you never would have known! I had a lot of bead work on my capped sleeves, I wanted my belt to match the beads on my sleeves and she did it perfectly! My moms dress had this horrible under layer that looked incomplete, Peggy took the top part of her dress apart and reconstructed it. She altered all of my bridesmaids dresses and my Grandma's (flower girl) dress. Her work is amazing and she gave me some great ideas to do with my dress later down the road!
If you need an alteration I wouldn't even think twice about whether or not to take it to Peggy! GO! She is amazing!

the dress designer. When I went to put the dress on in the store, I was so disappointed to see how tight it fit! It did not look right and I could not physically breathe or talk in it. I called a friend of mine freaking out as it wasn't a matter of weight loss, it was a matter of breaking my ribs to get it to fit. My friend recommended I not freak out and call Peggy at Custom Alterations. As soon as I spoke with Peggy, I knew everything was going to be okay! Peggy kept reminding me not to worry and that she would fix it. The top of my dress went under construction. To give you an idea- Peggy had to cut down the entire bodice of the dress, add 3 inches of fabric +lace, do the bead work, hem the dress, fix the back, and steam it. After 6 visits later, it fit me perfectly!! I could breathe, talk, dance, and sit in it. Not only was Peggy and her team a dream come true in fixing it, they were also such a fun and wonderful group to see each week. Peggy became a friend and it was almost sad leaving with my dress. Thank you, Peggy for your expertise, prayers, and friendship!

I had a few alterations I needed and all turned out perfectly for my wedding dress at a very reasonable price. The entire staff are all very sweet and helpful.
I don't even know where to begin. Peggy and her team were hands down, THE BEST! I found THE dress, took it to Peggy and the alterations began. The problem was, I couldn't find a...
veil, hair piece, etc. to match. So, she just made me a veil and flower for my hair that were absolutely perfect, along with my dress that became a perfect fit. She custom made a bustle for me and taught my mom how to do it in the shop and I was so comfortable in my dress all night long. I have now been going back to her for bridesmaid dresses and she is my first stop for anything alterations and my very first recommendation. She is honest, thorough, and does things the right way, the very first time. Skip the recommended people that at times, may take shortcuts, and go straight to Custom Alterations. Worth every penny.
Peggy is wonderful! She does amazing work and is so friendly and sweet! She is truly an expert at what she does. I brought my dress in thinking it just needed to be hemmed and the ...

Highly recommend!
